The public meeting planned for March 21 at the Heatherdowns Branch Library has been postponed due to concerns over the ongoing spread of COVID-19, the coronavirus.

On Saturday, March 7, the community coalition to save UTMC that has formed in response to the decisions made by UT President Gaber, the Board of Trustees, and Dean Cooper will release and discuss a letter they have written that summarizes the community meetings the coalition have held since December. Hundreds of residents in the community have come out to be heard and to share their experiences at UTMC. Also, new developments that have occurred since the letter was delivered to Governor DeWine will be shared with attendees.

“The community has been kept out of decisions made at UTMC. If President Gaber is hearing us, she isn’t showing that.” said Randy Desposito, “AFSCME 2415 are the nurses and staff that work day and night in this hospital and we care about the people that come in. We need the administration to support our mission.”

The community coalition will share a four page letter summarizing the best ideas and perspectives from the town hall meetings. Community leaders and citizen activists will be available to brief the press. 

UTMC was a stand alone medical college before merging with the University of Toledo in 2006. In the summer of 2019 UTMC gave up its Level 1 trauma status and was downgraded to a Level 3. The publically available campus master plan lays out a future that transitions to research, laboratory, and teaching while planning for stagnant enrollment at UTMC with a focus on the University of Toledo Main Campus on Bancroft Street and Toledo Hospital.
